Laundry...in the "good old days"...

WASHING CLOTHES

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin' water.

Sort things, make 3 piles:

1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

Hang old rags on fence.

Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

{For you non-southerners - wrench means rinse.}

Paste this over your washer and dryer. Next time when you think you have it really hard..read it.

Now be thankful.

Have a restful Sunday .

Ha, reminded me of my grama's journal entry's.....

"Did some laundry, washed up some dishes, swept and dusted, got 10 quarts of beets bottled. Then got ready for a Relief Society meeting at 10:00"

Good Lord, all of that before 10am? I'm sooo NOT blessed with her genes!!

How did we ever get so darn busy?!

Hope your weekend has been good.

Your so funny. Thanks for the laugh. Actually I was ironing today and I don't like it very much. But you have to iron, that's how I grew up. I remember a washing machine we had in our basement that my grandmother would use. It would wash the clothes but then you put it through a rolling press to get the water out.
We've come a long way baby!

I did laundry yesterday. Load clothes, put in soap, push button. Unload clothes, put in dryer, push another button. I've been looking for the "fold" button, but I guess I don't have one of those on my machines!

My husband wouldn't buy a dryer for the longest time, "my grandmother hung cloths in the winter on the line and if it was good enough for her..." I was never so greatful for a piece of machinery in my life!!
