How do YOU say "one"??

OK, "say" is not what I'm questioning ...exactly. How do you "Do" the number one? No, that's not right either...

How do you SHOW the number "1" ? Or the others, you know 2 through 5...

When Japanese count on their fingers they use only one hand. Counting from one through five starts with the thumb, then proceeds to the pinky. Each finger is folded down as it is counted. Six through ten are counted on the same hand in the reverse order, opening the fingers as they are counted.

When holding up their fingers to count, most Europeans start with the thumb for "one."

This was a source of wonderment to me when I was working at a cookie store in Sausalito years ago. Had LoTs of European tourists trying to order just one cookie - I'd ask "how many?" and they'd give me the thumbs up sign..I said "Yeah, they're great! So, how many??

Again with the thumb.."Yessir, they are the best..now, how many did you want to purchase?"

Holding up just your forefinger means "wait a sec" in most countries.

You may be trying to order one beer; they'll think you aren't ready yet. You may have to wait and wait...give them the 'ol thumbs-up-yeah-that's-great sign and you likely be served.

..then there's the issue with 2..

Can you say.."Looser"???

..oh..watch out for this one!! Or version of 2....More later...

Is it really 3..or something more........sinister??

I have chubby hands...just call me "No-Knuckles"...

Gestures, however, are another matter entirely. Yesserreebob....

The two-fingered "V" for victory symbol is fine palms-out. If you make it with you palm facing toward you, you'll offend any Brit—it's their version of "giving someone the finger."

Oh my...

The thumb-and-forefinger-circle that means "OK!" to you means "Up yours!" in some cultures...

Never, ever hold out just your forefinger and pinkie raised to make "horns" (or the "I love you" gesture from sign language).

Depending on how you hold your hand and where you are, you're either casting the Evil Eye on someone, or warding against it (which insults the people around you, implying that they are casting one..which they may be...)

'Ol Evil-Eye-No-Knuckles here..how may I help you??

Wonder what the heck this means...

Oh well..this is me...saying ..."Colleen out!"

I was only thinking today..."I must visit Colleen and get a laugh to cheer me up instead of worrying about a pending op" ....and you sure did the trick. I was laughing in no time. You are so funny. I love your hair and I'll swap you chubby knuckles for wrinkly ones.

LOL, Colleen! Like Debi says, it's a wonder we can communicate at all. Having lived in the Near and Middle East for some time, you had better watch out how you use your left hand as it can be very insulting.

Just found you recently Colleen, and am so enjoying all your posts!

As I recall, President Nixon once gave the double "up ....." sign in Brazil. Just one more way that we can get ourselves in all sorts of trouble as if we don't have enough already. Funny post!

Hi Coleen-Sometimes I think we communicate more with our body language than words. I tend to ramble on and words come out too fast, but the face and other gestures show us a lot.

Thanks for stopping by the other day. I think you can find organizers at Wal Mart and those kind of stores more reasonably. Another place is the scrapbook stores AND
the famous Doller stores.

I am almot finished and can see the floor now.......
