So, I've really been wanting to make one of those cloth books and I'm working on one of my maternal ancestors.
...but in the meantime, I am making one of children.. kids..youngsters..wee ones..
{reads: blue eyes and freckles 'neath a felt cowboy hat..
his 2 bestest friends are his dog and his cat..
He's one of the good guys, it's plain to see..
he's sure 'nuf a cowboy 'tho he's not even 3..
blue eyes and freckles, holes in his jeans -
out in the backyard-
ridn' his dreams..}
{reads: Our children are living messages we send to a time and place we will not see }
{reads: A boy can learn a lot from a dog: obedience, loyalty, and the importance of turning around 3 times before lying down}
{reads: A baby enters your home & makes so much noise for 20 years you can hardly stand it, then departs- leaving the house so silent you think you'll go mad-}
it's about 5 1/2 by 9-ish..
Ta-da!
I'm pleased with the outcome..now, to finish the one of all of the strong-willed Irish women of my heritage..

Wow! That is really beautiful!!
What a beautiful Book Colleen, it turned out amazing! I see a new project coming on!
Hi Colleen,
I have never seen one of these fabric books in person but they look amazing and you put a lot of yourself into them.
What a wonderful gift to receive... the recipients of your books will have a true keepsake!
Thanks for sharing.
And there is another reason I need to sew! It adds so much to a book, to combine all the elements, to bind it all together. Did you mix paper and fabric or is it all fabric? It is just wonderful!
Where do you find all the time to do such lovely work? It is a great idea and the words are nice too. BTW Zumba is taking off here now. There is an ad for it around every corner.
So pretty!! Love the quotes. Did you actually "make" the book part,too? (or just decorate) I'm impressed!
I absolutely love this, Colleen! Very pretty :)
That is beautiful. Makes my bumper pads look kind of pathetic. I'm sure your family loves these. What a treasure!
OK - just a few answers -
-the book is paper and fabric combined - and corrugated cardboard!
-it was made from a canvas-type drop cloth that I coffee stained and tore..no cutting allowed!
-I'm just re-learning to sew - it has been years! and I never was really good at it- but because of the "scrappy-grungy-oldish" look and feel of it - I don't have to be
-thanks for your comments! It means a lot to me- some people don't "get" that it's not really a scrapbook per se and it's kinds just to look at and "feel" both figuratively and tacitly..
That is an incredible creation. I am so impressed. What an heirloom to be treasured.
What a fabulous piece Colleen. A treasure to be cherish for a lifetime! Love it
Colleen!!!! Your book is GORGEOUS!!!! I'm so in love with it!! I love the layers and all the wonderful elements you've used...you inspire me to try a fabric book of my own! I'll just add that to my list of things I've got to do ~ I hope you're having a wonderful week angel, hugs and love, Dawn
Spectacular book, Colleen! I have not been brave enough to try one yet, but you've done a remarkable job! Love all the layers and extra touches..and the bits of text are fun..I especially liked 'what a boy can learn from a dog'..LOL.
The cover looks super as your new banner, too...so clever of you...
