Do dogs have nightmares??

I think we know the answer is "yes"..

Braxton often whimpers in his sleep..actually has those REM eye movements..all 4 little paws running in air..

We gently tell him "it's OK Buddy..." and he usually just settles down and continues to sleep like nothing's amiss..

But just a few minutes ago, we were awakened by horrible doggies screams from Lulu..

We were at her side in mere moments, both Mr. B and me, hearts racing, softly laying our hands all over her to feel anything that may have caused such pain..

We felt each leg, her tail, her belly..nothing..

She was looking at us like "wha the heck...?"

Braxton was at her side in a heatbeat..sniffing and obviously worried..

After we had out wits about us..and stopped the full-body-pat-down..

She jumped down, wagged her tail..and wanted a ..cookie!

She went outside to potty and was up in her window seat, on guard-duty, alert and trying to listen to all the other dogs, who, for whatever reason, decided that one by one they'd call out to each other..

"hey, watcha doing??"
"nothing, and you?"
"nuthin'..just want to endlessly bark at nothing..and you?"
"yeah..pretty much the same.."
"ok..good to hear ya..is that Trixie?"
"yes, hello boys.  watcha doing?"
"nuthin'. we both just want to endlessly bark at nothing..and you?"
"yes, me too!"
"ok.."
"ok..ok ok ok ok.."

Lulu seems none the worse for her nightmare..listening..keeping watch..

Me on the other hand....

..and so it goes. Another 2:20am on Main Street USA

Phew, that was a close call. I wonder what was chasing her. I'm pretty sure our dog dreams of chasing rabbits. Feet flying, panting, little yips, it's exhausting.

As I was closing down the computer for the evening last night, I looked over at 'the queen', she was belly up in HER chair, paws bouncing to some ethereal pray, cheeks puffing as she ran her dream-time course, I couldn't help but laugh and administer a belly rub...what great pals we have in our critters, they give us that good feeling in our belly that makes our existence worthwhile!

But, HELLO Scratchy, the snoring has to stop!!! I'm with ya on the 2:20 issues!!!

Just like babies aren't they. they can't tell you what is wrong. 2.20 in the morning is stretching the friendship surely. Cute photos.

Our Rufus dreams when he sleeps (which is most of the time) He used to run and soft bark in his sleep. In the past few years he has taken to howling in the middle of the night. Cocker Spaniel howles can get very loud at 2 am. We must love our doggies to put up with it all. Enjoy!! I hope you get a nap today!

Makes you wonder who the master is, doesn't it. I love Lola but she better keep her trap shut at 2:30. We are truly blessed that they let us share this planet with them. It's OK, Braxton and Lulu. The B-people are there for you.

I always feel sorry for them when I see they are dreaming and it's obviously not the greatest dream with all the whining and paws trying to get away. Poor babies. Cats do it too but not as much. Sometimes Hank will be sleeping and you can see the REM movements.

Poor dear....

At least it's nice to know that Lulu has so many caring family members to make sure she's okay!

Oh goodness! I hope you haven't been up the whole time sinze then! I hadn't thought about pets having dreams... but it's a cool thought ;)

I enjoy watching pets dream. Haven't experienced their having nightmares yet and, from the sounds of Lulu's, glad of it.

Aww... that is so cute! My dogs dream, for sure. Sweet Pea has a soft muffled bark that she barks during her dreams; Butterbean whines, and Tumpy... I don't think he dreams... he is just trying to breathe without snorting!

Sometimes happy dreams and sometimes, rarely, a nightmare. Makes you wonder just how "superior intelligence" we humans are really.

Our doggies have nightmares, too. I especially love to watch Muffin's little feet as they run in his imaginary yard. I am a nervous nellie with my dogs, too. Don't like thinking there is anything wrong with them. They bring such pleasure to our lives, don't they? Have a pleasant day! Twyla

I think they do. Our Skye has them every once in awhile. I love when their little paws are moving. You know they are running in their dreams.

Wanna see what I've been up to ??
